  3.     Hurrah for director Spike Lee and his film Do the Right
  4. Thing (PROFILE, July 17)! Lee will go down in history, at least
  5. among black people, but as neither an Uncle Tom nor a sellout
  6. who exploits his people, vanishes and lives happily ever after
  7. in Tinseltown, U.S.A. Instead Lee represents the kind of
  8. grass-roots ideology that has been lacking in our communities.

  12.     Your reviewer criticizes the way Lee's characters "vault
  13. from sympathetic to venomous in the wink of a whim" (CINEMA,
  14. July 3). This is just the point Lee was trying to make: real
  15. people under tense, emotional, untenable circumstances can
  16. indeed make the leap from love to hate.
