- LETTERS, Page 7Spike Lee's Got It
-
- Hurrah for director Spike Lee and his film Do the Right
- Thing (PROFILE, July 17)! Lee will go down in history, at least
- among black people, but as neither an Uncle Tom nor a sellout
- who exploits his people, vanishes and lives happily ever after
- in Tinseltown, U.S.A. Instead Lee represents the kind of
- grass-roots ideology that has been lacking in our communities.

- Your reviewer criticizes the way Lee's characters "vault
- from sympathetic to venomous in the wink of a whim" (CINEMA,
- July 3). This is just the point Lee was trying to make: real
- people under tense, emotional, untenable circumstances can
- indeed make the leap from love to hate.
